Frequently Asked Questions
What is a community Pantry?
A community pantry is a safe space where people experiencing food insecurity can access low cost and/or no cost groceries and household items.
How much does it cost?
We ask a $20 donation per basket of groceries from the pantry. Our model is cost-recovery, so your donation goes towards keeping the pantry stocked! We also provide free rescued bread and fruit/vegetables in addition to your basket.
Are there limits?
Yes, there are reasonable item limits we ask customers to respect. This ensures that everyone can access goods in the pantry and costs of products stay low.
Where does the food come from?
Most of the food is purchased from Foodbank, Australia's largest food relief organisation. Foodbank partners with charities and community organisations to distribute grocery items to those in need at low cost. We also receive food and grocery donations from local community organisations and individuals. Rescued food is sourced through food rescue organisations such as Secondbite.
What is the difference between "best before" and "use by"?
Some of the food stocked in the Pantry is close to, or just past, its "best before" date. The "best before" date identifies the date after which the manufacturer will not guarantee peak quality. It is perfectly safe to eat food past its best before date but some of the flavour, texture and/or quality may have been lost. Foodbank works with its partners to ensure products are still safe to consume and the quality is not unduly affected. Products must also comply with Foodbank's own requirements ensuring they are safe to consume. In general, the Pantry does not stock food over 6 months past its "best before".
